Domingo Zapata, born in 1974, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, is a Spanish-American artist renowned for his vibrant Neo-Expressionist paintings and sculptures. He maintains studios in New York City’s Gramercy Park, Miami’s Design District, and Hollywood, where he creates works that often incorporate mixed media, collage and graffiti.
Zapata’s art consistently explores themes of sexuality, opulence and vitality, blending fantasy and reality to draw viewers into a dynamic, cosmically beautiful world. He gained critical acclaim with his “Polo” series and has since expanded his focus to include elements of his native Spanish culture, American pop icons and contemporary themes.
Before dedicating himself fully to art in 2002, Zapata worked in finance and briefly in the music industry, co-writing lyrics for artists such as Michael Jackson and Jon Secada. His diverse experiences have influenced his artistic expression, leading to works that often incorporate text and visual cues, merging fact and fiction to enhance depth and meaning.
Zapata’s public commissions are notable, including murals for the Colosseum in Rome and the lobby of New York’s Plaza Hotel. In 2019, he painted the largest vinyl mural in New York City history on the facade of One Times Square. His work has been exhibited globally, with pieces acquired by prominent collectors like George Soros and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Beyond visual art, Zapata ventured into fashion by launching a collection at New York Fashion Week in 2017 and published his first novel, “The Beautiful Dream of Life,” that same year. His multifaceted career and belief that “art should be accessible to everyone” continue to influence contemporary culture, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in the 21st-century art scene.
